In Los Angeles, Madi Diaz Gives A Tour Of History Of A Feeling

My photos from the Madi Diaz concert was used for this review!

What happens when you sign a publishing deal at 20-years-old?

When singer-songwriter Madi Diaz signed a publishing deal at the young age of 20-years-old, she (likely) imagined a never ending list of opportunities and doors opening for her dreams to come true by becoming a successful musician. And for a while, it looked like it was actually happening.

And after five years, Madi Diaz and I are back at The Hotel Cafe

You know the story of how I met Madi Diaz during the Rachel Platten show over five years ago. Well today I was back at The Hotel Cafe to watch Madi Diaz perform.

She had announced the day before that she was doing a free show.

I got there and it was so cool to have her perform live at the same stage. It was all new songs from her upcoming EP. She told me that it should be out in September and that she had the itching to perform live, which is why the owner of the venue gave her the platform.

She was so glad to see me wearing my Riothorse Royale shirt and said that it would never go out of style. There’s something about Madi that I like so much. Her attitude is just so chill. She even shook my hand telling me how much she appreciated my support. She was even down for a selfie after the show.

It was pretty cool to be there and hear all her new songs from her EP. I really like them. I have two of them in this post. I can’t wait!

I got to see Riothorse Royale one more time for their last night of residency

A few weeks ago I saw Riothorse Royale perform at The Satellite for residency. Last night was their last night and I made my way back there to support my favorite rockers.

The music was great as usual and I was able to bring my housemate to check them out. He dug them. I love listening to them live. As much as their studio sound is great, something about hearing them live and loud made them so special. I really like them so I am glad I got to see them one more time because their next show is TBA at the moment.

But what makes this group so fun are the individual members. I’ve been a fan of Madi Diaz since 2012 so I’ve followed her career. She keeps things upbeat and always seems to have fun. She smiled throughout half the show just enjoying herself. Before the show even started, she was setting up her equipment when she saw me in a RHR shirt. “Fuck yeah!” she said, giving me a high five. She’s awesome.

I saw Riothorse Royale perform last night and it was everything I wanted it to be!

Riothorse Royale sounds even better live.

Riothorse Royale sounds even better live.

Some of you know that Madi Diaz is an artist I’ve followed for a few years since I saw her perform live in my first concert when I moved to LA. Since then I’ve seen her a couple times but not as a member of her band. The band is Riothorse Royale and she teams up with bassist Emily Greene. Their sound is very unique in a way that I like it. It’s not poppy or upbeat, but rather very somber and very heart-wrenching. I kinda like that. I had been listening to their music since they made it available on SoundCloud so I was getting myself super ready for the show.

I knew about this show for a while but I initially didn’t think that I would be able to make it. My old work schedule had me working up until 10pm. There was no way I could make it to see this show if that was still the case. But last week, they changed up my schedule and I get off work at 5pm. That’s great! But I was so exhausted (and wanted to avoid traffic) that I actually slept in my car in the garage before I left work at around 7pm. Smart move on my end as the drive was a little easier and I made it to Echo Park with plenty of time to spare.

Madi Diaz headlines The Troubadour and it was amazing!

Madi played all but one of the songs from her new album.

As some of you know, I saw Madi Diaz back in October. It was kind of like a reunion for me since she was the first artist I saw when I moved to LA. But when I heard she was coming back to LA after her big tour and headlining her own show, I had to be there. It was a really cool time just to see her once again and be part of her big successful show to wrap up her touring and this year.

I got to WeHo really early so I was just walking around all day around the area. The entire neighborhood is really nice. Unfortunately during the walk, I must have misplaced my sunglasses somewhere and when I got home, I realized that I don’t have them anymore. They were some Oakley’s and they were my favorite.

Last night’s concert by Madi Diaz was nothing short of amazing

Madi Diaz dazzles the crowd with a phenomenal live performance of songs from her newest album “Phantom.”

Back in May of 2012, I had just moved to Los Angeles from the Bay Area. I moved for work and in a nutshell, didn’t know anyone. I was hoping to get settled in with my new job and with some of the free time, go check out some things that I had only seen in movies and so forth. During my second week in Los Angeles, I saw that one of my favorite artists, Rachel Platten, was doing a show at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood. I had recently discovered Rachel’s music only a few months earlier but it was music that helped me transition through a period as I was preparing to move to Los Angeles.

As I was at the venue helping set up for Rachel and her show, the opening act of the night was this artist I had never heard before. Madi Diaz was on the stage with a guitar playing some very cool tunes. It was a nice setting of music to listen to as I started preparing the merchandise table. I really took notice when she covered a Bee Gees song. I know that anyone who covers them is real cool. I knew that she had something going and I was actually pretty surprised at how friendly she was after the show, just full of joy.

Fast forward to last night, nearly two and a half years later. I’ve settled pretty nicely in LA and things have been good. I’ve been keeping an eye on Madi’s career since the first time I saw her and recently she dropped her newest album “Phantom.” I had been listening to it almost daily during my drive to my new job and it’s just a great sound. I was so glad to see an artist continue to grow and evolve in her music. Last night was the first time I was going to see her perform since that weekend way back when I first moved here.

My awesome night at Rachel Platten’s 53 Steps tour!

Rachel Platten and me after the show. She’s pretty awesome!

Rachel Platten has become one of my favorite artists and I got a chance to check her out Saturday during her 53 Steps tour. I must say, this might have been the most fun I’ve ever had at a concert.

As some of you know, I normally don’t listen to this kind of music (it’s mostly classic rock and gangsta rap for me). But I discovered her because she sings the theme song to one of my new favorite shows: Jane By Design.

Since then, I looked her up and listened to her album Be Here. And since then, I’ve just really dug her style and wanted to see her perform live. And since I found out that she does Snoop Dogg covers, I knew that I had to see her live.

This was the first time she was headlining her own tour and I actually had the opportunity to volunteer and help sell merchandise. Sounded like a good opportunity to help out one of my new favorite artists.
